Several types of signature in one document
The signers of one document do not need the same type of signature. A document can be signed first on a tablet, then with a cloud QES and finally with a smart card. DigiSign sends it to each party through the channel chosen for them.
Legal framework
Electronic signatures and signing systems are regulated by Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (eIDAS) and by national law; in Bulgaria, the Electronic Document and Electronic Trust Services Act. They define three types of signature:
Electronic signature
Data in electronic form attached to or logically associated with other data in electronic form, which the signatory uses to sign.
Advanced electronic signature
The signer “locks” their statement with their private cryptographic key, and the recipient uses the public key to read it and identify the author. The author is identified by an identifier under their control, and the technology ensures the statement arrives unchanged.
Qualified electronic signature
An advanced electronic signature issued by a qualified (officially registered) trust service provider. It has the legal effect of a handwritten signature.
The difference between the three types is the level of verification of authenticity they provide. All three are legally binding. Under Bulgarian law, an electronic and an advanced electronic signature have the same legal force as a handwritten one when the parties have agreed so.
